What is the name of that metal pick your dentist uses to probe your teeth? What is a scaler? What do periodontal probes do? Chances are you may have some of these questions about dental tools, even if you visit your dentist every 6 months. Here are the answers to these questions and more as we cover 5 of the most common dental tools

Dental Explorer

Also known as a probe, this is the metal pick dentists use to probe your teeth with its hooked end. They do so because they are testing for soft spots on the tooth which are caused by decay.

Dental Mirror

This angled, circular mirror allows dentists to see the hard-to-see places in your mouth. It also reflects light and holds back the cheeks and tongue for an easier examination.

Water/Air Tip

A water tip sprays water into your mouth to clean out debris while an air tip suctions it out along with saliva. Both of these tools help clean the mouth and make it easier for your dentist to examine.

Periodontal Probe

If you have gum disease, your gums can pull away from the teeth and create pockets which trap bacteria. A periodontal probe has a blunt end which measures the depth of these pockets.

Scaler

A scaler is a tool used to clean away tartar, which is hardened plaque. Its narrow tip can clean all over the tooth and even under the gum line.
