Oral Hygiene Recommendations for Pregnant Women Who Want a Top-Notch Smile

Posted .

If you’re pregnant, it’s important to keep your smile and oral health in mind on a regular basis. This is important because pregnancy can take a toll on your teeth and gums, whether you like it or not. So, to help you keep your smile and oral health in tip-top shape during your pregnancy in Durham, North Carolina, our Fleming Dental dental team encourages you to do the following things:

Keep up on oral hygiene: Make sure you brush your teeth every morning and every night, floss your smile once a day, and rinse your mouth daily. Doing these things will help you keep your smile in tip-top shape by preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental issues.

Eat a balanced diet: Having a balanced and healthy diet is vital for your teeth during pregnancy. So, please do your best to eat enough fruits and vegetables and avoid snacking throughout the day. If this is difficult because of morning sickness, feel free to talk to Dr. Alex Fleming and ask for any tips he might have.

Visit your dentist: It’s extremely important to visit Dr. Alex Fleming every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. This is because the bacteria that promotes gum disease are bolstered during pregnancy. So, please remember to visit your dentist twice a year so our team can remove the harmful plaque and tartar from your smile. In addition, remember to mention your pregnancy to our team when you come into the office.

Control your smile’s exposure to acid: Unfortunately, stomach acid can wear away your tooth enamel and cause tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. This is why it’s important to rinse your mouth with water mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda after you throw up. Please don’t brush your teeth for at least a half an hour after exposing your teeth to acid.
