How Fluoride Strengthens Your Smile

Posted .

Our teeth are really pretty remarkable. You might think of them as basically bones, but they are actually complex living systems. Inside, they are quite soft and full of sensitive nerves, but their outer enamel is actually the hardest substance in the body. This notwithstanding, it is not invulnerable. Using fluoride can help strengthen it. But how?

Tooth enamel is made of a compound called hydroxyapatite, which contains minerals like calcium and phosphate. The enamel is constantly attacked by acid produced by bacteria in the mouth, and these minerals are lost in a process called demineralization. This is the beginning of tooth decay.

Fortunately, our saliva also contains calcium and phosphate, and works to remineralize enamel. Fluoride takes this process a step further. It combines with calcium and phosphate and forms a new compound in the teeth called fluoroapatite. This is actually stronger than hydroxyapatite and better resists decay.

Fluoride from any source performs this function, but often the amounts found naturally in water and other forms isn’t enough to be really beneficial. This is why using a fluoride toothpaste is so important. Mouth rinses and other supplements are also good sources. Any fluoride available to consumers, including that in community water supplies, is carefully regulated and monitored.
