Taking Care of Your Dentures

Posted .

If you are getting your first set of dentures, there are some things that you should know that will help your dentures to last longer and serve you better.

First, your dentures do need to be cleaned at least once a day. You can use dish soap or hand soap, a non-abrasive toothpaste, or a toothpaste formulated for dentures. There are toothbrushes designed for dentures, however you can also use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Dentures need to be kept moist if they are to retain their shape. When you go to bed at night, or if you take your dentures out for an extended period of time, you should place them in a soaking solution.

Trauma, accidents, and even age, wear and tear may cause your dentures to break. When that happens, you should not try to repair them yourself, even if it seems like it is an easy fix. Over-the-counter glues and adhesives may contain chemicals that are harmful for your body, and should not be introduced to the soft tissues in your mouth or inhaled. Your dentures should only be repaired or adjusted by your dentist. If necessary, he can craft replacements. Breaks and wear can be caused by changes in the shape of your mouth, as the shape of your dentures does not change.
