TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder is often a condition most aren’t aware they have until they visit their dentist. But if you are experiencing pain or discomfort on one or both sides of your face, you may have TMD.

Don’t worry, we’re here to give you all the information you need to know about TMD and how you can treat it today.

Temporomandibular joint disorder, common among those who are between 20 and 40 years old, is caused by injury to your jaw, the joint or muscles located near your head and neck. Some other causes may be a possible dislocation of a disc, arthritis, injury, tooth and jaw misalignment, stress or teeth grinding.

Common symptoms of TMD can include: pain and tenderness in your face, jaw, or other facial locations, problems opening your mouth wide, clicking or popping in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew, swelling on the side of your face, or trouble chewing foods.

If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, you should set an appointment with your dentist to discuss your symptoms. In order to diagnose TMD, your dentist will perform a general series of tests and exams.

If you do have TMD, don’t worry. There are treatments your dentist will recommend to you. Many of which can be done right at home. If you are looking for a professional TMD treatment, let your dentist know. They may recommend mouth splints or a night guard to correct the problem.
